Need another reason to defensibly destroy your archived boxes – especially those that contain redundant, obsolete, trivial data or records 📄 that have reached their retention period?
Here it is: It’s good for the environment.🌊
It is not uncommon for large companies to store thousands or even tens of thousands of 📦📦📦📦 with offsite storage companies for secure document storage and management.
And, it is costly 💸💸💸, with typical per-box monthly costs of at least $0.50 to $2.00 per month, with additional fees for retrieval, delivery, and other value-added services.
But, what many don’t factor in is the carbon footprint of those boxes.
On average, studies have shown that a single 📦 of documents (assuming a standard size) is likely to have a carbon footprint of approximately 3-5 kilograms of CO2 equivalent (kgCO2e) emissions.
To put it into perspective, this is comparable to driving a 🚗 for approximately 20-30 miles (32-48 kilometers) or the carbon emissions from burning around 3-5 gallons (11-19 liters) of gasoline. ⛽Now, multiply that by 20,000. And it is significant.
The carbon emissions in this case is about 60,000-100,000 kilograms (60-100 metric tons) of CO2e emissions, or that of 6-10 average US 🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡 in a year, or about 10,000 gallons of ⛽😲🚚🚚.
So, in addition to the cost savings, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation that you get by defensibly scanning documents, here is one thing more…
it is the right thing to do environmentally.
